Metaverse in Architecture

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

With the metaverse gaining mainstream attention due to increased investments in NFTs and cryptocurrencies, it is essential to understand this concept and explore the opportunities it presents.

Metaverse

Understanding the Metaverse:

The term "metaverse" originated from the science fiction novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. It refers to an online virtual realm that goes beyond the physical universe. In the metaverse, users can engage with augmented reality, virtual reality, avatars, videos, and other forms of communication. This digital space allows individuals to interact with one another using avatars and virtual reality technologies. Blockchain powers these new platforms, utilizing NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and cryptocurrencies.

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are unique digital assets that cannot be replaced by anything else. These tokens can represent various forms of media such as video games, music, images, and more.

Metaverse Platforms and Opportunities for Architects:

Metaverse platforms can be broadly classified into two major categories. The first category consists of blockchain-based platforms that use NFTs and cryptocurrencies. Companies like Sandbox and Decentraland enable users to purchase virtual land plots and create unique experiences within these digital spaces. The second category involves platforms that utilize the metaverse as a virtual meeting space. Major players like Facebook, Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft are actively exploring this sector.

For architects, the metaverse presents exciting opportunities. As people require spaces within the metaverse, architects and designers are needed to create and enhance these virtual environments. Architects can employ their unique designs and combine them with NFT investments in virtual real estate and digital architecture. This emerging field expands the scope for architects, providing a new platform to exhibit art collections and offer services or solutions that benefit millions of users.

Skills Required for Metaverse Architects:

To thrive as metaverse architects, certain skills are crucial. Proficiency in 3D modeling and computer-aided design is essential. Metaverse architects should also possess the ability to integrate professional knowledge across multiple fields, including user interface design, content design, character design, and game design. This multidisciplinary approach allows architects to create immersive and engaging digital spaces.

Famous Architectural Projects in the Metaverse:

Several noteworthy architectural projects have already made their mark in the metaverse. One example is Project Coral, launched by Virtual Reality Group in late 2018. It offers an interactive virtual reality experience through VR headsets, enabling users to collaborate and engage with each other. This concept of designing and interacting through holograms and 3D virtual reality, as seen in many science fiction movies, comes to life in Project Coral.

Additionally, Sahadi Architects created a designer urban city called "Liberaland Meta." In this metaverse, users can buy plots of land using cryptocurrency and explore buildings through avatars. Architecture studios and renowned companies are increasingly entering the metaverse industry, empowering individuals to interact, build, and create communities.

The Future of Metaverse Architecture:

The future of the metaverse largely depends on how well spaces are designed and crafted. Architects and designers stand at the forefront, providing desirable spaces for millions of users. The potential for creativity and innovation in the metaverse is vast, making this an exciting avenue for architects to explore.

The metaverse opens up new horizons for architects, allowing them to transcend the limitations of the physical world and venture into a realm of infinite possibilities. By leveraging their skills and expertise, architects can shape digital assets, create unique environments, and contribute to the evolving metaverse.
